Glasgow Hillhead Subway mural by Alasdair Gray commissioned by SPT on Vimeo.

FotoCeramic has provided the transfers for a new tiled mural commission by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport for a refit of the Glasgow Hillhead subway station. The mural measuring 2 metres high and 12 metres in length has been designed by well known Scottish artist Alisdair Gray and features a panorama of the Hillhead area around the station.

The main contractor for the mural was Nichol Wheatley of Perfect Circle Art. Nichol had the unique idea of using polished porcelain tiles in sizes up to 60x120cm which were individually cut to follow the natural lines of the artwork. It is thought that this is the first time that digital ceramic transfers have been used in this way.

The project created many challenges for FotoCeramic to provide large format transfers for application to an unglazed polished porcelain tile.
